Last spring’s “Thor” casting contest conjured more rumors than most fans could shake an Uru hammer at, so when the storm had finally settled to reveal Chris Hemsworth as the son of Odin, many reserved judgment—that is, until they saw him lead a starship as Captain George Kirk.
While his heroic role fetched plenty of fan support, Hemsworth’s biggest booster to date may just be his former “Star Trek” director J.J. Abrams, who had nothing but great things to say about the actor’s Starfleet performance.
“It’s very exciting. We really lucked out,” Abrams told MTV News in an exclusive interview ahead of the “Star Trek” DVD/Blu-Ray release next month. “He’s so crazy handsome and he’s so strapping with the classic leading man look. I sort of wish I had dirtied him up a little bit, messed his hair up a little bit.”
“The guy’s hair up until the last moment is sort of perfect. In retrospect I look at that and am like a little smudge or a hair out of place would have been a good thing,” he said. “The guy is a sweetheart and terrific actor.”
According to Abrams, the last time he had a chance to chat with Hemsworth was prior to his “Thor” announcement, but he knew the actor was destined for big things.
“[Hemsworth] was in a moment where he was trying to figure out what his next thing was going to be and he stayed strong in terms of what his commitments were to various projects. I knew that he was going to be given a lot of opportunities sooner or later and I was hoping it would be off of Trek,” said Abrams.
Abrams’ intuition seems to be right on target thus far, especially considering Hemsworth’s projected “Thor” followup as one of “The Avengers.”
Fans will have to wait until 2011 and 2012 to find out for sure, which ought to give Hemsworth plenty of time to smudge his face like a warrior born.
I just wanted to let you know that updates will be resuming soon. I haven’t had any internet at home for the past few weeks and haven’t been able to update with anything other than a few news entries which I was able to post from work. My connection should be restored within the next couple of weeks and I’ll be able to start updating properly again. Also, to those of you who’ve emailed me recently and haven’t received a response yet, I just haven’t had a chance to reply to you yet, but will be doing so within the next couple of days.
MGM Studios has decided to push Joss Whedon’s anticipated horror flick
The Cabin in the Woods, directed and co-written by Cloverfield’s Drew Goddard, back nearly a year, from its original release date of February 5, 2010 to the new date of January 14, 2011.
MGM reps tell ShockTillYouDrop.com the reason they’re doing this is because the early response to the film
has been phenomenal and they’re going to spend six months or so converting the picture to 3-D.
That big boom near Woodward and Mack today was an explosion staged for the filming of “Red Dawn.â€
Flames and debris erupted from a long-closed auto repair shop around 1:30 p.m. It was all done for the remake of the 1984 film that featured a young Patrick Swayze.
Clusters of passersby gathered to watch as the “Red Dawn†crew got ready for the big moment. Throughout the morning and the early afternoon, Woodward Avenue was dotted with military-looking vehicles and extras in military uniforms.
Jackie Hirst, 39, a lab supervisor whose office is nearby, came out to watch some of the filming. She said the building used for the scene was spruced up over the past few weeks and turned into a Tuffy muffler shop for the scene.
“It’s kind of neat. We’ve been having posters put up in the lab saying it’s coming, if you hear an explosion, don’t worry, it’s safe,†said Hirst.
“Red Dawn†has been filming since last month at various locations in metro Detroit. Shooting is expected to continue through early December. The cast includes many young actors on the verge of stardom, including Chris Hemsworth (who was in the new “Star Trek” movie), Josh Peck (the TV series “Drake & Josh”), and Adrianne Palicki (“Friday Night Lights”).
There also was a staged explosion Monday in downtown Detroit for the movie. Like the original, the reboot of “Red Dawn†is expected to include plenty of action and adventure.
“We try to have some big explosion every few days on this movie,†quipped producer Tripp Vinson.
