ComingSoon.net attended a press conference preview for the Licensing International Expo’s upcoming Las Vegas convention. A promo poster Marvel & Joss Whedon’s superhero ensemble film The Avengers was revealed.
The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.
Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston & Stellan Skarsgård, the film releases May 4, 2012!
While states such as Illinois have seen a decline in Hollywood movie production deals that help fill empty hotel rooms, Ohio is seeing an increase in movie business, Ohio’s NBC affiliate WYKC reports.
Ohio’s film office secured four more movies to be filmed at least partly in Ohio. One of them – Marvel Entertainment’s The Avengers – had switched locations to Cleveland from Detroit. Marvel’s decision to shoot scenes for The Avengers in Ohio cost Detroit’s four-star Westin Book Cadillac about $280,000 in business, hotel sales manager Amanda Toy had previously told the Detroit News.
Entertainment Weekly says The Avengers started filming one month ago in Albuquerque, N.M., and was scheduled to move to Cleveland, followed by New York City. The movie will be released in theaters on May 4, 2012. (Source)
We know that the cast of The Avengers know each of the characters they’re bringing to the big screen, but how much do they know about their fellow teammates and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?
In this MTV Movie Awards special feature, MTV Movies Correspondent Josh Horowitz asks three of the upcoming film’s stars — Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth — a few questions to gauge their Avengers IQ. (Source)
Production on Marvel’s The Avengers is already underway, kicked off near the end of April with much fanfare and a personal message from writer/director Joss Whedon. At the time, the studio’s press release confirmed the central antagonist as none other than Loki, the conniving figure played by Tom Hiddleston in this month’s Thor.
Of course, we also know the cast consists of Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill). However, if recent reports are accurate, there may be another villain facing off against this formidable team.
Potential spoilers from here on: So far, the running theory is that Loki uses the Cosmic Cube, teased in the “stinger” following the Thor credits, to contact the Skrulls. The green-skinned alien race of shapeshifters forms an army that battles the superhuman forces of The Avengers. However, Latino Review reports Loki may also wind up stealing and harnessing the power of another magical artifact from Odin’s vault: the infinity gauntlet.
The gauntlet — here’s a picture of it at Comic-Con 2010 — is a golden glove fitted with six “infinity gems” that give its wielder God-like power. In a ’90s Marvel comic book series, appropriately titled “The Infinity Gauntlet,” a mad Titan named Thanos creates the powerful object to give him mastery over time, space, mind, soul, reality, and power. Then he destroys half of Earth’s population and imprisons the universe’s other Cosmic entities.
Latino Review has been fairly reliable in the past, especially with Marvel-related mysteries, but this should be treated as a rumor for now. The site doesn’t reveal how Thanos fits into the story, though given the prominence of Loki and the Skrulls this time around, it may be safe to assume the cosmic villain part of a potential setup for a larger scale sequel. The forward-thinking plan has been Marvel’s modus operandi since Iron Man, no reason to suspect their May 4, 2012 release is any different. (Source)
“We wanted to do a tease of an image — Let people know that the movie has started filming, and it’s real. We thought it would be fun to have the cast chairs — that’s the big selling point of the movie, that these people are together on the set.
I did get to New Mexico on the 1st day of shooting. Right off the bat, it involved a couple of characters who’d been in other movies meeting for the first time. It was a little surreal, realizing it was actually happening.”

The Avengers comes to theatres May 4, 2012.
Following recent news that Natalie would be reprising the role of Jane Foster from Thor in writer-director Joss Whedon’s super-team movie, The Avengers, she revealed to TodayOnline that she will not be in it.
I’m not in The Avengers, but I’m signed up for the next two [Thor] sequels if they are made. I think these inter-related Marvel movies are great fun. The Avengers will be like Ocean’s Eleven with the superhero all-stars!
The Avengers are currently filming in New Mexico and will be moving to Cleveland soon, a recent report states that Joss Whedon and company might be demolishing some buildings before they leave The Land of Enchantment for Cleveland.
Reports On Location Vacation:
The Avengers has been filming at Albuquerque Studios for the past few weeks but they are also expected to shoot at the Albuquerque Rail Yards, and we’ve even heard they’ll be blowing up a building or two before leaving New Mexico!
The Avengers stars Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downy Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Furry, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and will be released on May 4, 2012 . (Source)
Geoff Boucher over at The LATimes recently sat down with Thor star Chris Hemsworth and they discussed if we’ll see Captain America and Thor clash in The Avengers, how he feels about working again with director Joss Whedon, and what aspect of The Avengers is he most excited for.
On If We’ll See Thor’s Hammer Hit Captain America’s Shield:
“I’m sure that’s up there on the list of possibilities, that would be something to see at some point,” the star of “Thor” said cryptically when asked if his character might tussle with Captain America in the classic Marvel tradition of superhero sparring. “I’ve thought about that too.”What He Thinks About Thor And Captain America: TFA Facing Off In The Box Office:
“I have brothers so I know about competing with someone at the same time you’re cheering for them,”What He’s Most Excited For:
“Jeremy, Chris Evans, Scarlett, Mark Ruffalo, all of them, wow, it’s going to be fun,” said Hemsworth, who before “Thor” was best known to American audiences for a fleeting appearance in the J.J. Abrams “Star Trek” film. “I really feel like a fan in all of this because I’ve seen all these individual characters come to life. Now to throw them together, you feel like a kid in a way, there’s really a giddy feeling. I’m looking forward to being in a room with not just those actors but those characters, these larger-than-life characters, and seeing how that turns out. I want to see how Captain America and Thor and Iron Man react to one another.”How He Feels About Working With Joss Whedon On The Avengers:
I’ve worked with Joss on ‘Cabin in the Woods’ — he wrote it with Drew Goddard and Drew directed but Joss was on set and very collaborative with ideas, so I got a sense of his personality and who he was. So I feel less cautious now, knowing him and really liking him. I’m really excited to work with Joss and to see where he takes Thor and all of the Marvel characters.”
All of MTV News’ recent interactions with Chris Hemsworth, a.k.a. the man about to grace movie screens as the God of Thunder in Thor, have naturally been very focused on the highly anticipated film and all the nerdy details that come with portraying a comic book superhero.
We love everything “Thor,” of course, but since the Norseman will also be appearing in the possibly even more anticipated and mysterious “Avengers” movie, we can’t help but pester everyone in the high-profile cast about the film, which just started production.
So when MTV caught up with Hemsworth recently to expand on our ever-growing database of “Thor” information, we prodded the Aussie for some Avengers details. Although he couldn’t give us much, he seemed excited that his onscreen brother Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) will be joining him on set, as well as the potential for a superhero smackdown.
“[It's great] to have my brother there. Even if we don’t get along,” Hemsworth joked. “[Hiddleston] is fantastic. [He gave] an incredible, incredible performance in the film, and he’s going to do the same in this one.”
With regard to how all those superheroes will be interacting, particularly Tony Stark, Hemsworth said the environment will be tense.
“There’s certainly some tension. You’ve got big egos on these superheroes,” he said. “None of them want to be told what to do or form an alliance with these people who they don’t understand anything about,” he said. “In the comic books, you see that it’s not an easy mix; that’s definitely in [the movie].”
When asked if we’ll see the ensemble cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Hemsworth and Hiddleston) come to blows, Hemsworth surprised us with an answer in the affirmative.
“Well, you’d want it, wouldn’t you? Otherwise, why are we all there? I think it would be safe to say you can expect something like that,” he said.
In a recent interview, Chris Hemsworth has revealed that Natalie will be back as Jane Foster for a big screen adaptation of The Avengers.
The Avengers is scheduled to hit theaters on May 4th, 2012, and will unite Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) for the first time in cinematic history.
In a recent interview with Italian news site BadTaste, Hemsworth stated that his multi-picture deal with Marvel Studios delineates two Thor sequels as well as three Avengers projects. He went on to say that Natalie – who portrays his Earthly love interest Jane Foster – will be reprising her role in The Avengers. (Source)
